Afters Ice Cream: home of the ice cream-filled milk bun, unveiled its first dairy-free ice cream creation and a vegan milk bun this weekend at Coachella. The vegan treat will complement the wide range of vegan dishes at this famous music festival.
Based in Orange County, California, this company has created an Instagram-worthy food trend with its signature ice cream flavors, decadent dessert creations, and signature milky bun (a sweet bun served hot, much like a donut).
After ice cream started as a small business between two friends, Andy Nguyen and Scott Nghiem, and opened in 2014 in a Fountain Valley mall. The modern ice cream parlor has grown to more than twenty locations across California, each with loyal customers and lines. Outside. So far, however, he has yet to create a vegan option.
“We’re thrilled to make a change at Coachella this year, having been an iconic food vendor at the festival for the past three years, and to continue our history of incredibly long request lines by introducing something we didn’t do. Never before have our customers and Coachella customers had demand year after year,” Nghiem said in a press release announcing the vegan debut.

Afters Ice Cream
Afters Ice Cream might have lines around the block at each of its stores, but for a good reason: their ice cream-filled milk buns sprinkled with crazy toppings are as addicting as they are delicious. However Choose from artisan flavors like Cookie Monster, Banana Walnut Fudge, and Jasmine Milk Tea.
Although their decor wasn’t cutting edge, they had their entire selection of afters ice cream, toppings, and milk buns.
I’ve always enjoyed their ice cream selection, with offerings like cookie butter and jasmine milk tea. I didn’t particularly like their milk bun when I tried it in the past as I found the addition of the donut too sweet. However, visiting this new San Diego store was weird, and I did not get their signature item.
Firstly Mr. K. and I both opted for the milk rolls but asked for the unglazed version of the donuts. Our carefully crafted and freshly pressed creations were presented to us a few minutes later.
I have chosen my favorite type of jasmine milk tea with a fruity gravel filling. Mr. K opted for Triple C (caramel, chocolate, and biscuits) with a crunchy biscuit cereal topping.
Because they melted quickly, I didn’t get a chance to photograph them individually. I stacked them alone for this photo and managed to get a few good shots before having to start eating them before they made a mess quickly.
My previous experience with Milky Buns has been frozen versions, which I found too sweet. Without the frosting, I could enjoy the milky buns more this time. They were pretty filling, and I’ll probably stick to a few scoops of ice cream next time.

All in all a fun place to visit, especially as summer approaches. We’ve always enjoyed ice cream’s unique taste; many people love milk buns. Glad to see they are in San Diego now, so I don’t have to drive to Orange County to get their ice cream.
